17�Թ� students affected by the COVID-19 virus outbreak and subsequent closure of area businesses where they worked can now apply for financial assistance through the 17�Թ� Foundation.

In response to the situation, the Foundation has created the new Student Emergency Assistance Fund to help students continue their education and meet daily needs, said Nicolet Foundation President Sally Mode.

“We are in uncharted territory and the impact this virus is having on our students is unprecedented,” Mode said. “Many students work in our local communities but are unable to work because they are being asked to go home for the public’s safety. We created the fund to protect the health and safety of students struggling during these difficult times.”

Anyone wishing to donate to the Student Emergency Assistance Fund can go to the same page and click on the donation link.

The 17�Թ� Criminal Justice student club has been one of the first to donate to the fund, contributing $1,000 for emergency assistance.

The student club commonly holds fundraisers throughout the year with the money going to help members attend student professional development activities across the state.

“This year those events have been cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic,” said Phil Schmidt, Nicolet Criminal Justice instructor and club advisor.

“In light of that, club members decided that they wanted to donate $1,000 to the Foundation’s Student Emergency Assistance Fund. They saw this as a great way to help their fellow students struggling financially because of the virus outbreak. It’s inspiring to see students helping students during these challenging times.”

 The fund is designed to help students buy food, help with living expenses, and pay for unexpected medical and dental emergencies.

“These are challenging times for us all, but especially for students without the financial means to weather this global event,” Mode said.

In related activities, the college is also helping area health care facilities meet demands of the COVID-19 pandemic. The college’s Health Occupations and Public Safety programs recently donated a wide variety of medical supplies to Northwoods health care clinics and facilities to help treat patients.

These items have included isolation gowns, ear loop face masks, medical gloves, disinfectant wipes, and hand sanitizer, along with other items.

To limit the spread of the COVID-19 virus, 17�Թ� suspended classes March 17 and converted all classes to online instruction or other distance learning technology on March 23. These modes of instructional delivery will continue until at least May 26 based on the Safer at Home recommendations.

The college has also closed all buildings to the public until further notice.
